Woodwick or Wood Wick Candles?

Wood wick candles, just as the name implies, are candles with wicks made of wood. They are generally sold under the brand Woodwick. These type of candles were fist created by the Virginia Candle Company, which is based out of Lynchburg Virginia.  The candles are now sold under several names brands, available on line and in fine stores such as Hallmark.

The wicks are made of pressed layers of wood glued together to created a smooth slow burning wick. Wood wicks come in different thicknesses, depending on the size of the candle container. There are both soft and hard wood wicks. Ideally, the wood is treated with wax prior to being crafted into candles, and cured by baking. The softer wood will produce more crackle, while burning faster, the hard wood will burn a bit slower, with lest crackling.

So the question comes to mind, why, why wooden wicks? What are the advantages or disadvantages of burning a candle with a wooden wick instead of a traditional candle wick?

Some basics of wood wick candles are

  • They are typically  used in containers- not votive or pillar type candles
  • They can be paired with soy or paraffin wax
  • Because they are wood, they pop and crackle as they burn
  • Because they are wood, you get the wood scent, as if burning a fireplace
  • Wood wicks burn clean
  • They are very nice to set in the fireplace and burn for a “summer” fireplace, for the ambiance without the heat.
  • Because they are relatively new to the market they are not sold at major department stores such as Walmart, but they can generally be found in your local mall
  • Wicks are available for making your own candles with wood wicks, these can be ordered on line or found in craft and hobby stores.

As with any candle, keep the wick trimmed to approximately 1/8 inch, and use precaution with an open flame.

First, you must determine the proper location for such a site. One would not wish to place a new shopping center or strip mall adjacent to an established one (unless the population in that area has increased substantially and warrants the change). Checking the viability of possible locations and the locations and success of similar commercial retail establishments in the state is a necessary first step. Tax records, at the state and county levels, should assist with making these decisions.

Second, cross check the above by determining where the greatest population increase has occurred. [One must know if this will be a strip mall type of design suitable for commuters, a walk up type for adjacent apartment buildings or condos, or a large drive up type that single family home dwellers prefer.] If the greatest population increase is correlated with a single family home development, then, the latter may be viable. If this is a commuter type of design, then, determine where the new industries or office buildings have been developed as regards to where people live. [Remember, people on their way to the office want ease and rapidity of getting in and out of traffic as they are likely in a hurry.] [Don't forget, there are luxury type of malls too catering to the wealthier client.]

Finally, one should consider the population surrounding the selected location itself. One must extract a statistically representative and reliable sample. [Remember, as population size decreases, sample size increases (a representative sample of the entire USA can be carried out with 2500 RANDOMLY selected respondents but a population of 100 requires a sample of the entire population). There are tables and charts which provide RANDOM sample guidelines as to the size of the required sample.]

Each household sample has an associated cost too. Thus, that determines the type of instrument to field, e.g., mailed survey (a lot of non responders but relatively inexpensive), personal survey (quite expensive $150 per household surveyed + pre-screening surveys + follow up surveys + replacement surveys (for people not at home or not interested)), or telephone surveys (less expensive but they must be rather brief, with information loss, and the replacement rate is extensive – in order to maintain RANDOMNESS – thus your survey results may be inaccurate).

Conclusion, the questions must be fielded during the pre screening section of the survey. Often, in most large surveys, tried and true questions are used over and over again, e.g., age, gender, occupation, household income, type of stores currently used, internet shopper?, etc. One also needs to decide upon the use of open and closed type questions, skip patterns, etc. If this is a mailed survey, you want to keep the respondent's interest. Usually mailed surveys provide an incentive to the respondent, e.g., $10.00 – $20.00 per household surveyed, or more. Perhaps if a large corporation will be an anchor tenant of the commercial site, they will provide a gift card as an incentive.

Analysis: All of the general statistical methods are available, e.g., chi square (over used), difference in means, regression analysis, ANOVA (1 and 2 way), CANOVA, correlation coefficients, etc. The choice is determined by what you wish to determine from the survey, e.g., the location, the type of stores, the type of client (shopper), etc. Always be certain and use Simple Histograms, Means, Median, Modes, SD, Variance, etc.

What a great idea! I'm curious to know if this project is in cooperation with the Navajo Nation, or if this is something being done independently.

In Wisconsin, one of our tribes has recently installed solar hot water heaters as part of the ARRA grant. If you are doing this in conjunction with the tribe, I was thinking they might be able to receive the same grant. Even if this grant is not feasible, maybe there are other grants out there that could be helpful. Also, maybe if this is an independant project, there may be grants available from non-profit groups.

Of course, in NM, solar panels will be much more beneficial for winter heating than here in Wisconsin. :)

Here's a link to a short bit about our water heaters, but it also contains the name and number of the Development and Modernization Director who might be resourceful should you need more information.

Hope this was helpful and good luck!!!

"Resolutions, resolutions, resolutions. How many have you made in the past and never kept? Plan on making some for this new year? How about the resolution to turn over a healthier lifestyle! Start it with soy candles. They burn cleaner and are better for your health. They produce very little to no soot, are easy to clean up with soap and water, create no toxins in the air, last 50% longer than paraffin candles, and are a renewable resource being made from soybeans"

i recommend Wood Wick Candles, which are soy. they smell great, and sound like a fireplace ( without the messy clean up). They can be bought anywhere. My favorite place to buy them is Ambler Flower Shop. The website is below. You can get as many as you want delivered to your door. Also you can get chocolate, flowers, gift baskets, and of course the candles!

Strange that it may sound, but perhaps you should consider Brisbane.
Yes, yes, it's not exactly a small town, but there are areas of Bne that 'seem' like a small coastal town, such as to the north, Bribie Island, Beachmere, Donnybrook, even Sandgate, Shorncliffe, Deception Bay, & to the south Wellington Point, Victoria Point, Cleveland etc.
No highrises in these outer suburbs, sheltered Moreton Bay with dozens of islands, easy to get to Moreton Island, Stradbroke islands, various dive-site wrecks etc. Unlimited access to shops/restaurants etc.
If that doesn't appeal, perhaps look north to places like Magnetic Island.

I live in Winterpeg. I know cold. You should get Glass doors for it.

The doors should always be fully open or fully closed. Glass doors should be fully open when starting a fire and when the fire is burning strongly. The glass doors should be closed as the fire dies down to minimize the amount of room air going up the fireplace chimney. When the fire is out close the damper. The damper should always be fully open even if the fire is embering.

Always use seasoned wood and newspaper in it. Gauge your logs so you don't have a fire going if you have to go out. ALWAYS use the screen. Make sure the damper is open or smoke comes in and everything you own will smell of it.

When it's that cold out the fireplace never goes out! The fireplace can throw off so much heat you'll want to open a window at 40 below! If this is not a studio and you have a seperate bedroom leave the door open before you go to bed to warm it.
