Aromatherapy Candles can be a great way to set the mood for lovers. The hardest thing when picking out the right type of candle is picking the right scent for the mood. There are many different scents you can choose to heighten the moment in the room.

To get the best aromatherapy candles you should first make sure that the wax is pure soy wax and not inferior paraffin wax. Soy wax releases no toxins as it is burned and also burns at a cooler temperature than paraffin wax. Soy wax releases no soot. Also Soy wax offers longer lasting candles and the most fragrant.

Now that we have talked about what to make sure the candle is made out of, it is tie to discuss what scent to pick. This is very important when trying to strike the mood. The last thing you want to do is get a candle to strike up the mood for you and your lover and instead pick a scent that makes you relaxed, sleepy, or tired. This could be a night blower.

Jasmine is definitely a top choice for lovers. If you are looking for passion, Jasmine is a night blooming flower that comes from China, Morocco, and Egypt. The exotic scent of Jasmine stirs the senses, images of mystery, and sensual passion.

Patchouli is another great choice for lovers. Although some people do not care for this scent. You should definitely smell this before purchasing. Patchouli is a tropical herb. It comes from the mint family. It is known for having aphrodisiac qualities. It has been used for several centuries and dates back through history. It is very commonly used in perfumes, body sprays, and fragrant oils. You must be very careful when purchasing this scent because their are many cheap scents out there and this one, if not natural fragrance will just plain stink. Patchouli is a very strong scent. A little goes a very long way. But this scent will for sure excite your lover.

If neither of those scents excite you, then you should try Ylang Ylang. Ylang Ylang is used in Indonesia for newlywed couples. Once they are married, they spend the night on a bed made out of Ylang Ylang flowers and this is a scent that will bring natural love. It is known for attracting love and natural passion between lovers. This scent is also most famous for being the main ingredient in the perfume Chanel Passion Number 5.

Vanilla is also a great scent for lovers. This was made famous by Alan Hirsch who wrote a book about this scent in 1998. Vanilla has been used in aromatherapy as far back as 1520. It is known for a very sweet smell. It has been used for centuries to lure excitement and intensify sexual desires. This was first used by a Spanish Conquistador in the 1500′s and has been being used ever since.

Hopefully this has helped you in finding the right scents for you and your lover. Different scents work better for different people. Sometimes scents can react slightly different with different people as well. The main thing to remember is to try all scents until you find one that works for you and your lover. Always remember to make sure the candle quality is a good one. Sometimes you can get a bad candle and make a wrong judgement on a scent. Don’ be scared to pay the few extra dollars to get the high quality candles. It will pay off in the end.

When you’re looking for a good way to relax or to relieve stress scented aromatherapy candles can be a wonderful mood stabilizer. There are many other options that you could choose from such as exercising, drinking or smoking (which is not necessarily healthy), reading a book or doing something that you enjoy such as traveling or visiting a day spa. Stress is bad for you because it can cause many different health problems such as migraines and ulcers and honestly, there is no fun in the word stress. What better way to add some fun and tranquility to your life than to light and burn scented aromatherapy candles?

Aromatherapy can be provided in forms such as lotions, oils, sprays, diffusers and candles. Aromatherapy scented candles have been a first choice for stress relievers for many people because they help to make lives more fulfilling.

These scents are herbal scents and they have been proven to be relaxing and calming. They don’t need to be mixed with any other scents in order for them to work.

Some people say that jasmine is similar to an antidepressant because of its amazing ability to help people that have nerve problems.

BERGAMOT – Bergamot is a fabulous scent. It is not only a relaxing scent but it is also a scent that will help loosen up tight, aching muscles.

ROSE – The scent of a rose is a perfect scent with several delightful benefits including its ability to be very relaxing. Its scent has been known to balance out the hormones of a woman so it is perfect to use during that time of the month. It also has a calming effect. The rose scent is definitely a big help when your emotions are all over the place. Ladies love its calming effect. Rose has also been known to possibly help with depression.

CLARY SAGE – Clary sage is a beautiful mixture of both light and fruity scents. It has a sweet and floral element to it. It ignites a bright, happy feeling that causes joy in most of its users and it has also been known to help ease fatigue and pain.

NEROLI – Neroli has an exotic twist to its deep, intoxicating scent. It is a scent that is extracted from bitter orange. It can help to relax as well as help one handle stress. It can also help fight depression and possibly even help develop more confidence!

VANILLA – Vanilla is one of the best-selling scents right of all time. It is relaxing yet calming. Some also believe that it can be used as an aphrodisiac. I guess you would have to be the judge of that!

So you have perfected your candle making skills, you are making beautiful and unique candles, and you are ready for the world of retail. There are a few things you need to consider before you make too much of an investment or creating too high of an inventory. Things like pricing, where to sell, how to market your hard work, and still have fun. Let’s look at these things in more depth.

First is pricing, how do you know what price to charge? Do your research, know what other local sellers there are and what their prices are, know what the store bought candles are selling for as well. And remember people are willing to pay more for unique, handmade items. Assess what you have invested in the product.

By adding the cost per ounce of your wax and any additives such as color, scent, or chemical additives then break down into your cost per ounce, figure the number of ounces in a particular candle and multiply that by your cost per ounce. Use this to be sure you are covering your expenses, then add cost per hour for your work, combine all the info and you should have a good idea on pricing

Small gift store,

Family-owned pharmacies,

Furniture stores and even consignment shops.

Craft shows and

Craft fairs

Local gift shops,

Flower shops,

Art shows

Fundraisers with local organizations

Open a retail candle shop

Do home candle parties

A web site is always a good idea too. Many potential customers can view your products. Consider sites such as Etsy which let you list your items for a minimal price.

If you go with a typical retail setting (craft shows, local stores or gift shops) you need to also look at how to display your creations. They must be neat and organized, but creative, something to catch ones eye. They should not be crowded, or hard to reach, If your candles are scented, they packaging must allow the potential customer to smell the candle. If you do several scents, you could also set out a jar of coffee grounds to “neutralize” the nose between sniffs!

Know your neighborhood or sales area, and what style is popular, if it is a rural area, maybe a country style, in the city it may be more “new age”. Study the customers and cater to them. Remember “green is good”, try to use minimal packaging that can be recycled, and last of all, don’t loose track of the fact you started your business from a hobby, be sure you have fun doing it.

If you are thinking about starting your own candle making business, you need to make sure you have the knowledge you are going to need. From the materials it takes to make candles to methods and techniques to increase sales – online and offline – there is a lot of knowledge you need. While we give you a bit of information here at Candles Corner, it’s always good to do a little research on your own. With that in mind, here is a list of some great books on making candles.

The Candlemaker’s Companion: A Complete Guide to Rolling, Pouring, Dipping, and Decorating Your Own Candles

This is a book for people who enjoy BURNING CANDLES and not just saving them. The book goes into waxes, wicks, molds, scents, and a variety of decorating techniques that you can use. There’s not much here about selling candles, but if you’re a beginner (or an expert looking for new ideas) then this is going to be a great “companion” to have with you.

Called the Candle Bible by some, it’s a great way for you to make sure you have all the basic information about making candles on hand when you need it. From big candles to small candles, this book has it all.

Candlemaking the Natural Way: 31 Projects Made with Soy, Palm & Beeswax

This hardcover book by Rebecca Ittner is good for those who want to make “natural candles.” Rebecca Ittner is an editor, writer, photo-stylist and craft enthusiast. Her work has been featured in Romantic Homes, Somerset Home, Somerset Life magazines and many craft books.

With 128 pages, it came out in August 2010, so you know the information is rather recent.

The book includes some great projects for those who want to make candles the natural way.

If you have any other great ideas for books on candle making, please leave a comment below. We’d love to hear from ya!

Wood wick candles, just as the name implies, are candles with wicks made of wood. They are generally sold under the brand Woodwick. These type of candles were fist created by the Virginia Candle Company, which is based out of Lynchburg Virginia. The candles are now sold under several names brands, available on line and in fine stores such as Hallmark.

The wicks are made of pressed layers of wood glued together to created a smooth slow burning wick. Wood wicks come in different thicknesses, depending on the size of the candle container. There are both soft and hard wood wicks. Ideally, the wood is treated with wax prior to being crafted into candles, and cured by baking. The softer wood will produce more crackle, while burning faster, the hard wood will burn a bit slower, with lest crackling.

So the question comes to mind, why, why wooden wicks? What are the advantages or disadvantages of burning a candle with a wooden wick instead of a traditional candle wick?

Some basics of wood wick candles are

They are typically used in containers- not votive or pillar type candles

They can be paired with soy or paraffin wax

Because they are wood, they pop and crackle as they burn

Because they are wood, you get the wood scent, as if burning a fireplace

Wood wicks burn clean

They are very nice to set in the fireplace and burn for a “summer” fireplace, for the ambiance without the heat.

Because they are relatively new to the market they are not sold at major department stores such as Walmart, but they can generally be found in your local mall

Wicks are available for making your own candles with wood wicks, these can be ordered on line or found in craft and hobby stores.

As with any candle, keep the wick trimmed to approximately 1/8 inch, and use precaution with an open flame.

At no other time of year are decorating and entertaining so prevalent. With the holidays upon us, we want to add beauty and scents to our home. One simple way to do this is with the addition of scented candles. So, we rush off to the store in search of the perfect candle. While finding a color to match your decor may be simple, it is more difficult to select a scent. The solution to that is to buy unscented pillar and tapers in colors to match your decor, then add scent by purchasing votive candles which can be dropped into holders so that the color is hidden and the chosen scent can fill your rooms.Votive candles are standard size candles of 2 inches high by 1.5 inches diameter. Votive candles are available in an endless variety of scents So how do you choose the scent? First you must understand the power of smell.

Keep in mind that your sense of smell is 10,000 times more sensitive than any other sense, so having your home well scented is particularly important for entertaining. Aromatherapy–the art of using aromatics has been around since the time of the ancient Egyptians.

History documents that 6,000 years ago, scented oils – concentrated, undiluted oils of flowers, fruits, leaves, barks and spices – were used for massage, medicines, cosmetics and perfumes..Understanding that, lets look at the affect certain scents are thought to evoke.

Romantic scents: jasmine, patchouli, freesia, gardenia, rose, sandalwood, cinnamon.

Energizers: tangerine, eucalyptus, mint, lemon, bergamot, ginger.

Calming: lavender, frankincense & myrrh, cedar, almond, heliotrope, marjoram, hyacinth, vanilla.

Refreshing: eucalyptus, grapefruit, lemon, lime, orange, mint, tangerine, rosemary.

Keep in mind after selecting the scent that you really get what you pay for with candles, Cheap candles often come in a few, one-note scents – rose, linen, cucumber. While more expensive candles coming up with unique and pleasant scents that combine several scents to make wonderful combinations or have more exotic scents, such as “New Car Leather”, “Fresh Grass Clippings” and “Cotton Candy” Votive candles give you a affordable and versatile way to add wonderful scents to you home.

You wouldn’t think that making candle and selling them online would be one way to riches, but it can be if you put your mind to it and work hard. Are you ready to become rich by selling candles online?

Start Your Candle Empire Online!

The first step to selling candles online is to get candles to sell. The thing to remember is that there are TONS of people selling candles online. You will really need to make yourself stand out and be special. To do this, look at your strengths and weaknesses and play off of those.

Grow Your Candle Company

The good news is that there are companies who offer all of these services at rather low prices. You’ll have to search around, but you should be able to find someone to help with these tasks. If you want to be taken seriously these days, you are going to need your own candle website. This can be had for under $500/year if you shop around. (Leave a comment if you have any questions about this aspect of selling candles online.)

It may take you a while to get to this point, but you should think about it from the beginning – even if you don’t think you will want to sell. You never know what the offer might be so never say never.

Aromatherapy Candles – the Good and the Bad

Aromatherapy is a growing business in the United States though it is a well-known homeopathic form of medicine in several European countries including France. Candles are a convenient and relatively inexpensive way of delivering the healing scent. Many companies have jumped on the bandwagon by producing their version of these candles, but buyers beware, not all of them are created equal!

It is very important to make sure that the aromatherapy candle is scented with essential oils. Many commercially produced candles are made with chemicals that could be considered toxins, such as: acetone, benzene, xylene, and phenol. Know what you are buying before you take it home.

The best way to do this is to purchase a candle made from natural materials like beeswax or soy and add your own scented oils to them near the wick. If you don’t want to do this, there are several vendors around the nation that sell them commercially on the web or in smaller stores.

Don’t let the possible dangers of candles distract you from the benefits of aromatherapy.

Relaxation

Relief from insomnia

Relief from depression

Heightened libido

Relief from congestion

Relief from nausea

Some of the better known fragrances and their properties are: lavender- calming, citrus- energizing, eucalyptus- relief from colds and allergies, and basil- concentration. The candles come in many forms, everything from votives and jars to tins for the traveler. They can be displayed in something attractive to decorate your home as well.

While aromatherapy is just starting to catch on here in the states, it is an accepted form of treatment in other places. Be careful and investigate the content of the candles that you purchase and spend a little more to get pure essential oils and natural materials. Enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy in an attractive and convenient method of delivery by using candles.

Candles today are primarily decorative, but their history has been guided by a variety of uses, some of which are quite surprising. Since long before Christ, people have been making candles from whatever substances were convenient to their cultures, and it all adds up to an interesting story.

What is fascinating is that the craft of candle making was developed independently by many ancient cultures with no known connection, so it is fair to say these portable sources of heat and light are a staple of human civilization.

Ancient Candles and Odd Ingredients

The earliest known candles were made from beeswax by the ancient Egyptians around the year 3000 B.C, although these just burned off the wax directly and did not use a wick. Similarly, the Chinese created torch style candles that burned off whale fat during the Qin Dynasty around 200 B.C. The mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang was found with the candles still intact over 2000 years later upon its discovery during the 1990s.

As Chinese civilization developed, so did its candle making and the ingredients involved. Insects with high fat content were used for wax, while wicks and outer molds were made from rice paper. One thing you can say about using insects instead of whale fat is that it would have to be more cost effective!

Other interesting ingredients include boiled-down cinnamon to create a wax, which was used in ancient temples in India, and evidence of wax from tree nuts in ancient Japanese candles. Tibetans have burned butter from yak’s milk as candles for hundreds of years. Further down the line, Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest discovered candlefish, a type of smelt fish so fatty that once it is dried it can be used as a candle with no further refinement or processing. All you have to do is put it on a stick and light it up for a slow burn.

Early History of Candles and Their Surprising Roles

As history went on, candle making developed and staple ingredients became more widespread and standardized. Tallow, made from animal fat began to be used in many places as the wax of choice despite its smokiness and odor. As religions became established, the luminescence of candles gave them a spiritual function to go with their use as sources of light.

Jewish traditions often feature candles and Hanukkah, the festival of lights, is symbolized by a menorah holding 9 candles, each to be lit on a separate light with its own ritual. This holiday dates back to 165 B.C. The Bible references candles in certain books, and there is evidence of the Romans using candles in Easter church service back in the 300’s A.D.

Another new role for candles emerged when they began to be used as timekeepers as far back as the late 9th century. It was not possible to figure out the time of day from a candle’s flame, but the amount of time passed could be figured out by measuring how mach wax burned. Alfred the Great, king of the Anglo-Saxons used such candle clocks to partition his day into equal increments for sleep, education, prayer, and his kingly functions. Eventually, this idea gave rise to the 24 hour candle.

While King Alfred’s candle clocks simply used lines down the wax to mark each hour, those of the Sung Dynasty in China early in the first millennium were more intricate. These candle clocks draped strings with weights on the end over an incense style candle at set intervals, so as time went on, the weighted strings would drop and ring a sounding bell to let everyone know an hour had passed. This concept was taken further when each hour’s worth of incense was a different scent so multiple senses could tell people when time was passing.

The Rise and Fall of Candles in Modern History

Modern history marked massive changes in the production and use of candles. Industrialization led to a massive boom in the manufacture of candles, but that same appetite for technology eventually darkened the future of candles.

The explosion of the whaling industry in Colonial America during the 18th century brought with it a seemingly endless supply of whale fat to be used for candles amongst many other things. Specifically, the wax created from sperm whale oil, known as spermicetti, was virtually ideal candle wax because it burned brighter, maintained its form, and lacked the foul odor of many candle fuels used at the time. It is a shared view among many historians that spermicetti candles were the first standardized variety.

The decline of the whaling industry allowed tallow to become the primary source of candle wax until some key developments in the 1800s. Joseph Morgan developed the first machines for the mass production of candles in 1834, and around the same time the French chemist Laurent developed paraffin wax. Paraffin was a petroleum product that was more clean, consistent, and economical than all previous candle waxes. Along with the advent of the animal product stearin wax around the same time, these two waxes became vastly popular and are the main sources of wax to this day.

It was not long after that historical peak that two newer inventions replaced candles as primary light sources and started their decline. The first invention was kerosene lamps, which could burn for hours with quite a strong flame. Towards the end of the 1800’s the introduction of the light bulb quickly spread and sealed the fate of candles as practical tools of illumination.

It was not the total demise of candles, however. As the focus went away from candles as light, the focus on candles as decoration took center stage. In the second half of the 1900’s, candles had a revival through areas such as aromatherapy and scented candles. Incense became a staple of counter culture movements and the role of candles in romance should always have a place. While the history of candles included a rise and fall perhaps due to not being the most convenient light source, it is hard to argue they are not the most beautiful and relaxing sources of light.

Different types of candles can do many things to a room or mood. They make the lighting seem a bit more intimate if with friends, and romantic if with that significant other. Different kinds of candles can relax you or fill your house with wonderful smells. And a different kinds of candles can bring a different kind of mood. Here are a few of the more popular candle types for you to choose from when you’re looking for that right lighting for your dinner or other event.

Below we are going to take a close look at all the various types of candles that are available. From candles that smell really good to those with a wooden wick, we have basic information on all kinds of candles. If you are curious about learning more about candles, you have come to the right place. Keep reading to find out more and keep checking back as we add great new information about this source of light and relaxation that has been with humanity for many, many years. Modern candles are safer and better in many ways and there is now a dizzying array of different candles to choose from no matter what you want to achieve.

Aromatherapy Candles

Aromatherapy candles are specially made with different ingredients like lavender, soy, and other minerals designed to bring you into a certain mood or relax you. The ingredients in these candles are designed to relax you and calm you down.

Common ingredients are lavender, green tea, and sandalwood. When they’re paired up with other aromatherapy and therapeutic products, they can be wonderful for relaxing after a long day.

The essential oils used can alter your health and mood, and are usually picked into certain blends to elicit certain bodily reactions. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes designed for different therapies, and can last from only a few hours, up to and even longer than an entire day.

Beeswax Candles

Beeswax candles are much the same as any other candle, in that they come in a variety of shapes, but they’re becoming a popular choice because they’re more environmentally friendly than other candle types. Beeswax candles are made from renewable resources provided by nature. Because of this, most companies will also make them chemical free and without synthetic compounds to provide candles that are safe for the environment and do not produce as much waste in the manufacturing process.

Beeswax candles can include different essential oils like lavender and tea to make aromatherapy candles or may just be made with the beeswax for a more traditional candle. Beeswax is sought after for than because it is environmentally friendly, but they are also clean burning and safer. The wax tends to drip less so it’s less likely to cause a mess or drip off and burn or start a fire.

Pillar Candles

Pillar candles are denoted by their larger size. They’re made a bit larger and can last a lot longer than a traditional candle. Pillar candles can come in a variety of heights, but they often have a thicker diameter than normal candles. Pillar candles can be any color or shape, from square to octagon, but they’re usually tall circular candles of one color.

One of the benefits of a pillar candle is they last longer than other shapes, and because of the size and single wick, the wax doesn’t drip. When the candle is burning, the outer part of the candle does not burn, so if it was bought to fill the décor of a room it can still be burned and used without losing its decorative style.

Jar Candles

Jar candles are becoming very popular for scented candles. Scented candles can often be very strong, and jar candles are perfect for them because they can be covered to mask the order if you want to use a different scent.

Jar candles are often very decorative, and make great gifts. They’re usually filled into a fire proof, air tight, glass container, so dripping and messes from these candles is very minimal. But, it’s important to be careful and watch out that the jar does not shatter or break as you reach the end.

The stress of the heat from the burning candle can cause cracks or breakages of the candle, and could make them more dangerous than other candles.

Floating Candles

Floating candles have always been very popular choices for candles in centerpieces or in table settings. The smaller votive candles are usually short, wider candles, floated in a bowl or small cup of water. Floating candles make a great part of a centerpiece because they’re smaller and produce a fair amount of light, but are also inexpensive and you can use more or less of them because of their smaller size.

They’re used often for centerpieces, and filled into vases or bowls, and those can often be filled with different decorative fillings like gems, pebbles, or beach glass. Because they’re smaller candles, they make great decorative additions to a table in a more intimate, indoor, setting.

Woodwick Candles

These are very popular candles. Woodwick refers to the brand name of a particular candle, but it also represents the way the wick is made in these special candles. Made from a special kind of wood, woodwick candles crackle while they burn slow like a traditional wick.

Over the last few years, Woodwick candles have become very popular with all types of people. If you are looking for a new kind of candle experience, we think you should check out candles with a wood wick. If you search around here at Candles Corner or do a Google search on the Internet, you can learn more about Woodwick candles.

Flameless Candles

Flameless candles are a good choice for dorm rooms or apartments where burning of candles may not be allowed. They’re often scented like a plug in scent, and with some the scent can be changed to suit your mood. One problem people used to have with flameless candles is they never really looked like candles, just very small lamps. But, companies are starting to develop lamps for the flameless candles that flicker and resemble a real wax candle.

They’re completely safe to leave on for long periods of time because there is no dangerous fire. They also make great décor for the bathroom, bedroom, or other places that having a normal flame candle would be dangerous or against a lease agreement.

Candlesticks

Candlesticks can refer to a few things. A candle stick is a holder or stand designed to hold a candle up while it’s burning and to catch the wax. A candlestick candle varies in size, but they’re usually taller, thin candles, that are often used for religious purposes or for a classic, intimate look.

Candlesticks are great for dinner settings and tend to be cheaper that other kinds of candles. The wax can drip a lot, but candlesticks come in wax-less types that are cleaner and safer for home or religious uses.

Candles add a great decorative touch to any room or setting, If you’re looking to set a mood, or fill the room or house with a scent or certain décor, than choosing the right candle is important for portraying the right setting.

Make a decision about what perfect for your dinner, party, wedding, or whatever event you’re planning, by finding a candle that is going to set the right mood and give it that decorative flair.
